Discipline Specific Training
The Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline specific skills. Discipline Specific Training courses are 2-days, with the exception of Slalom at 3-days. The training is designed for those working towards a Coach Award and is also suitable as stand-alone training.

What are the Prerequisites?

  • Full Home Nation Association Membership
  • Relevant Leadership Award for some disciplines (as listed on page 19 of the course guide download)
  • Core Coach Training (or equivalent, as listed on page 18 of the course guide download)

CORE Coach Virtual Online Course Option

From March 1st 2021 British Canoeing are providing the option for learners to access the Core Coach award, via virtual learning online. We will be providing dates and opportunities for students to access this learning and development,once course resources have been standardised. This is a fantastic option and will hopefully open up the award, and allow learners to access the course as a continued personal development tool, and providing flexibility to fit the learning around their  other commitments.

The course ratios are 1:4 -8 candidates

Candidates can still opt for the face to face training program.

The Coach Award offers discipline specific pathways across all disciplines and introduces the skills and coaching behaviours required for developing performance through progressive coaching.

The Coach Awards are designed for people whose core function is to coach paddlers who want to gain/improve paddlesport skills within the discipline chosen. This will include coaching beginners new to the sport, or paddlers looking to develop their skills in the given discipline/environment. The coach is able to plan, deliver and review progressive sessions safely, effectively and independently.

British Canoeing Level 2 Coach Core Training- 2 Days.

Having completed the BC Level 1 Course/ Paddle Sport Instructor, APL or just want to get a thorough introduction to coaching then this Is the natural progression for you.

The Coach Award content is delivered through the Core Coach Training and the Discipline Specific Training.

The Core Coach Training will explore different approaches to coaching, understanding and enabling learning, and some core coaching skills. You will also be supported in evolving your personal coaching development plan to enable you to take your learning into practice after the course.

The Discipline Specific Training focuses on HOW to coach the discipline specific skills and WHAT you will be coaching. The training explores how to coach technical and tactical skills. The course will help coaches plan and deliver safe, enjoyable, progressive coaching sessions and explore specifics to help coaches coach some typical athletes/learners relevant to you/your discipline

The Core Coach Training is a mostly practical two day course. These are typically delivered over consecutive days. The Core Coach Training is generic and open to Home Nation members with an interest in coaching. Candidates do not need to register for this, but will need to for the discipline specific training course. We encourage candidates to register early to access the eLearning and other resources available once registered.

Coach award information

This Discipline Specific Training is a mostly practical two day course, with the exception of Slalom at three days. The training is designed for those working towards a Coach Award and is also suitable as stand-alone training. Please note, for the Open Water Canoe, Sea Kayak, Surf Kayak, White Water Canoe, White Water Kayak options, you will need to complete the relevant Leadership Award ahead of the Discipline Specific training.
